Derek Dunfee is awesome. He lives for huge waves and heavy barrels.
Huge congratulations to Derek for earning a spot on the alternate list for the most prestigious surf contest in the world, the Eddie Aikau Invitational for 2011/2012!
Derek has also achieved the coveted Billabong XXL award for biggest paddle-in wave of the year 2009, and has a Surfer Poll award for his hard charging tactics that sometimes end in terrible beatings.
Derek and I grew up together at WindanSea beach, La Jolla. Derek and I are also fortunate enough to surf and work Tavarua, Fiji together. We were tow partners in the Nel Scott big wave contest in Oregon, and he was the first guy to get me psyched on big cold water waves like Mavericks and Todos Santos Island, Mexico. It’s incredible to see where DD has taken his surfing.
See you on the North Shore real soon for the Eddie Aikau opening ceremony DD!
Head over to his blog www.derekdunfee.com and tap into Derek’s latest projects, he’s always working on something soul and cool.
