Not sure if I quoted it correctly, but remember reading something like “surfing’s an act – not an identity, an art – not an industry” in Surfers Journal years ago.
Many surfers have a strong love/hate surf industry relationship. There are a ton of really positive, and heavy negative aspects resulting from surf brand marketing and manufacturing.
Manufacturing Stoke does a good job of articulating many tender points, both environmental and philosophical, that are the result of the surf industry’s drive to make money from the surfing lifestyle.
