The Rusty GTR is a loose and forgiving hybrid shortboard. It works insane in waves under head high, so it’s a great board for Southern California.
The GTR flies over flat sections with its single concave bottom, and goes on rail like a shortboard with its progressive outline. Riding it a few inches shorter than a standard shortboard allows the rider to slide the tail without the nose getting in the way.
It’s one of the best high-performance small-wave surfboards available. The GTR is incredibly responsive and will help you enjoy progressive surfing Southern California conditions.
I ride my GTR a bit wider and thicker than my standard shortboards and use Futures AM2 fins. Chose either EPS or PU foam, whichever buoyancy and feeling under your feet you prefer.
A similar alternative to the GTR is the Rusty R1. If you’re looking for something a little more versatile when the swell bumps up, the R1 is a good choice. The R1 is the quiver step between the GTR and a Rusty Redline shortboard.
